About
The foundation of building a vessel by hand. Available for 6 months after purchase. Organic Coiling is a recorded, on-demand workshop designed to help you understand clay through the process of building rather than simply following instructions. You will learn the fundamentals of the coiling technique and how to gradually build an organic vessel from the base upwards. The focus is on understanding the behaviour of the clay, finding the right pressure in your hands, creating strength and balance, and allowing the form to develop naturally. Throughout the workshop, I will guide you through each stage of the process, from preparing the clay and creating the base to building, shaping, refining and finishing your vessel. The aim is not to make an identical piece to mine. It is to give you the understanding and confidence to work with the material independently and develop your own forms. You will learn: • How to prepare and work with your clay • How to build a stable base • How to make, join and compress coils • How to control thickness and maintain structural strength • How to shape an organic form using your hands • How to refine the surface and finish the vessel • How to work with the natural movement of the clay What you need: • 5 kg of stoneware clay with grog, ideally 0–0.5 mm • Metal scraper • Cutting wire • Sponge • Wooden, rubber and metal rib • Water • Needle and trimming tool • A suitable wooden work surface • A quiet space where you can work comfortably • Pottery wheel (Not required but recommended) The workshop is pre-recorded, so you can work at your own pace, pause, repeat and return to any part of the process whenever you need. This is Level 1: a foundation in hand-building that you can continue to build on.
